Mountain Bike World Championship

By:

Published: October 10, 2006

When it comes to mountain biking competitions, championships are the most extreme and only well trained athletes can perform in them. This isn't for those who occasionally enter a local downhill or trials competition. A championship competition is meant for professionals; people who devote their life to practicing and training for these events.

Of all the competitions, the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships are the biggest and most advanced annual events. The Downhill, 4-Cross and Trials competitions are the most prestigious events in the world and the Cross Country is second only to the Cross Country Mountain Bike Competition in The Olympics.

The Union Cycliste Internationale Mountain Bike World Championship is made up of those four events, involving over 700 cyclists competing from more than 45 nations. Like a nomad, The World Championships change location every year, attracting over 40,000 spectators each time.

The Competitions
Each competition is unique and varies depending on the year and location. They are never the same, giving a brand new challenge to the competitors with each new year.

Cross Country
The Cross Country Mountain Bike World Championship consists of a circuit course, close to 6km in length, and is made up of different sections including single track and technical riding with many climbs and descents. Endurance is key to surviving this competition.

Downhill
Around 2km, this is much shorter than the Cross Country competition. The Downhill World Championship is all about speed. It is a single track race, almost completely made up of technical aspects.

4-Cross or 4-X
This is an extreme competition in which riders race elbow to elbow down a 500m track over the course of 40-60 seconds. In each run, the riders start at a very steep, forward dropping gate. The event begins with each participant taking an individual timed run down the track. Out of all the competitors, the top 64 men and 32 women progress to the next stage, with the fastest of them choosing which lane to race from at the gate. From there on, the riders race four at a time, eliminating two riders each race. The two fastest riders from each group move up to the next round of competition until a victor emerges from the final four.

Trials
Trials are more than the name implies. Mountain Bike Trials are competitions where the competitors must ride over both man made and natural obstacles without touching their feet to the ground. They could be climbing anything from dirt hills and large rocks to tables or cars. For every time the rider touches his or her feet to the ground, they will earn points. The winner of the competition is the person who scored the least amount of points during the event.

The Mountain Bike World Championship is intense and not meant for just any average rider. Competitors gather from around the world for this event.  If you plan to participate, you need to be serious about it.
